Train your pet dog to walk calmly through doors

One thing I can’t stand from a pet dog is when he barges past me to get through a door. It shows that the pet dog has no respect and that the pet dog thinks he’s in charge.

Although I always walk through a door before my dog, I don’t think this is absolutely needed with all dogs. If the pet dog walks through the door calmly in front of a person and then sits and waits while looking up at its owner to decide where to go next, that is acceptable. The problem is, a lot of dogs barge through doors showing dominance or because they haven’t been given any rules. That puts the pet dog in control and can end up being a big problem.

A few people who I run dogs for said they are working on having their dogs sit and wait whenever they go through a door to go outside. This is a very good idea, and it’s what I make with my own dog. but I got this post idea because when Ace travels to my friends’ or relative’s houses, he seems to forget all policies and tries to barge ahead through doors like it’s a competition.

I am at my mommy and dad’s house ideal now, and they have two dogs, a golden and a springer. When Ace is with them, all three dogs try to barge through doors, literally knocking people and objects out of their way. and my pet dog is probably the worst of the three. maybe he is even causing the problem.

When I’m finished writing this post, I am going to practice entering and exiting the front door with all three dogs. I will start outside and have all three sit on the driveway. then I will open the door and go inside first. once inside but still holding the door, I will release them. but if any pet dog tries to sprint through ahead of everyone else, then that pet dog (probably Ace) will be put back in a sit position. only calm dogs get to come in.

Once we are all inside, we will do the same thing, only heading outside this time. I’ll see how lots of reps it takes to get three calm dogs. If they can’t do it, I will practice with one pet dog at a time first.

For those of you with one problem dog, follow these steps to get him to walk calmly through a door:

1. Make your pet dog sit when you put on his leash.

2. walk to the door, but whenever your pet dog runs ahead, stop and make him sit at your side. I realize this could take up to 15 minutes to walk 10 feet, but it’s worth it. Your pet dog will start to get it. He will learn that he does not get to go outside unless he listens to you.

3. before you go through the door, make your pet dog sit again as you open it. tell your pet dog to stay. walk through the door and then invite your dog. If he runs ahead, make him sit again.

4. continue the same procedure if you have outdoor steps, going even slower on the stairs because this is where lots of dogs like to run ahead.

For all of the above steps, if your pet dog breaks the sit position before you say “OK,” just say, “No! Oturmak.” and put him back in the sit position. For some dogs, this will take several repetitions. Make sure to train your pet dog to sit until you release him by saying “OK” or “all right.” There is no point in training a pet dog to sit and then pop ideal back up again. They have to be trained to sit until released. start with the pet dog sitting for two seconds and build from there. A trained pet dog must be able to sit for ten minutes or a lot more with no problem. For really hyper dogs, try standing on the leash a foot or two from the dog’s neck so he can’t go anywhere if he does stand.

It helps to use treats as a reward for calm behavior. Excited, verbal praise normally makes things worse because it gets the already hyper pet dog even a lot more riled up! Remember, calm is normally best.

Her yıl onları seviyorum.

Karda oynamak? Köpeklerle mi? İş olarak mı? Bir yetişkin olarak”?

Fena değil.

Yukarıda iyi arkadaşım yakut. O onun unsurunda. sadece bir gün daha!

How to instruct Your dog to Be patient

Every day, I am so grateful that I have a patient (some might say lazy) dog. While Baxter seems to have a bottomless well of patience, this is a quality that can be developed, no matter what your dog’s natural tendencies are.

Patience is important for a variety of situations. It makes your time with your dog more pleasurable. and it also can help keep your dog safe.

How to instruct your dog to be patient

Let’s start with a few examples of how patience can help.

You come home with groceries. You greet your dog, who is thrilled to see you, but then you resume unloading the car. will your dog …

1. wait quietly for more attention until after you’ve brought in all of the bags and put the food away?

2. jump on you and paw you and dig through the grocery bags?

3. Go lay down when you tell him to, but whine while he watches you work?

You’re out for a walk and you meet a friend. You stop to talk. will your dog …

1. Greet your pal politely and then sit at your side until you’re ready to go?

2. Tug at the leash, trying to convince you to keep walking?

3. Obey your command to “sit,” but quiver with energy the whole time you’re talking?

I think many of us know which of these options we prefer!

The good news is that patience can be taught. Patience was a lesson that was interwoven in many of the training classes we took with Baxter. We started with fairly easy scenarios and then built up to more challenging situations.

Steps on how to instruct your dog to be patient:

The simplest spot to start is at home. When your dog wants to play, eat, opt for a walk or be petted, don’t always oblige him best away. You can say, “Give me a minute, buddy.” and carry on with what you are doing. give yourself a sensible time limit, so your dog isn’t waiting too long. You want him to realize good things come to those who wait.

If your dog is more demanding, try ignoring him. Or ask for a down-stay or send him to his “place.”

Now, I’m not saying ignore your dog all the time. The major joy of having a dog is interacting with him, and those interactions are vital for your bond. However, you will not be able to interact with your dog each time he wants you to. So setting some boundaries is important.

Lessons we did with our trainer – teaching our dog patience

Here are some of the lessons we did with our trainer to help our dogs build patience.

In one class at a quiet local park, we tied our dogs to a post and walked away (but always within the dog’s sight). This exercise was about confidence, count on and patience. We wanted the dogs to learn that they were okay on their own and to wait quietly until we returned.

Some people didn’t get very far before their dogs got upset. If this happens with your dog, stop. turn around and look at your dog. Don’t make him more anxious by walking further. When he’s calm, even if it’s only for a second, go back to him and pet him and praise him. Repeat this exercise and your dog will learn that you’re coming back.

In another class, we were doing agility, having our dogs walk on leash along the top of a stone wall. At the end, rather than right away having our dogs hop down, we put our dogs in a sit and spent some time gazing at the lovely park before we allowed our dogs to get down.

Some dogs shifted uncomfortably or broke their sit and attempted to hop down. This lesson is important to reinforce that you’re in charge. think of a situation where it wouldn’t be safe for your dog to hop down. You want him to wait until you say he can go.

Increasing the challenge

Over the weeks of the class, we challenged our dogs more. We moved from parks to city streets and practiced sit, stay, wait at a busy corner. We tied our dogs up outside of the coffee shop and went in to buy a drink.

In our final class, we celebrated everything we had learned with a visit to restaurant. We brought our dogs and sat on their dog friendly patio. all of the dogs sat quietly under the table while we talked about everything we’d learned and toasted ourselves and our dogs.

It was a joy to have our dogs with us and know that in a variety of environments and situations, our dogs would behave politely, unwind and enjoy being with us as well.

When is patience many important to you? Is your dog naturally patient or impatient? What are your suggestions for teaching your dog to be patient?

Köpeğim korkuyor mu?

Not: Bu, Rachel Duncan’ın BakedBlog blogunu yazan bir konuk gönderisi.

Why Do Dogs Lean On You?

Do dogs lean on us out of dominance?

I saw a comment thread on reddit where everyone was saying how cute it is when their dogs lean on them for affection. most people said they like when their dogs lean on them, and they don’t seem to think anything of it, good or bad.

Then there were a few people who jumped in preaching Cesar-Millan talk, saying that a dog that leans on you is trying to assert his dominance. and of course this created all kinds of drama as people became overly emotional and defensive about “dominance theory.”

Here’s the thing: sometimes dogs do use their bodies to claim space or to get to an object first or to simply be in the lead. call it dominance. call it cute. call it whatever you want. It’s what dogs do.

But not a single person (except yours truly!) brought up the fact that many dogs will lean on their owners for security. They will lean on their owners because they are shy, fearful or insecure in that moment. They are not trying to dominate their owners. They are trying to feel safe.

Nine times out of 10, when dogs lean on us they really are just seeking attention. They like to be close to people. and yes, sometimes it’s rude.

Why dogs lean on us

My dogs Ace will come up and slam his side into my legs, wiggling his body into a U shape and whipping his tail every which way.

I don’t see this as dominance (although he does want my attention) or insecurity (although he does feel safer with me around). He’s just trying to connect with his best friend! ve tahmin et ne oldu? İşe yarıyor!

I always bend down and give him a good butt scratch. “Good boy, Ace!”

But there are dog owners who don’t read into anything their dogs are telling them. everything the dog does is cute or funny to them, even when the dog is trying to communicate something. To them, a dog that leans couldn’t possibly be trying to say anything other than “I love you.”

And then there are dog owners who assume every action from a dog always means the same thing. Growling always represents dominance, for example. Or a wagging tail always represents happiness. Or leaning always represents friendship. Hmm …

In order to understand our dogs, we need to pay more attention to what they are trying to communicate during each specific situation.

Dogs can certainly block us with their bodies in order to gain access to what they want, but they will also lean on us in order to feel safe.

Here are some examples of when an insecure dog might lean on his owner:

1. shy dogs will typically lean on their owners in order to feel safe

My former foster dog Cosmo was a leaner.

He would lean on me when someone came to the door or when we attended an adoption event. This wasn’t because he was trying to dominate me. He was leaning on me in order to feel more secure.

Poor Cosmo was always stressed at adoption events. His ears would be back. He would avoid direct eye contact with people. He would pant with an open mouth. usually one front paw would be raised and tucked up into his chest. sometimes he trembled. sometimes he even growled at people.

No wonder no one was very interested in him during these events!

I made sure not to give Cosmo affection when he leaned on me for security. telling him “It’s OK. Önemli değil. good boy,” would only teach him to continue looking to me for security. In order to help him grow as an individual and build his confidence, I had to teach him not to depend on me so much.

So I would block Cosmo with my hip or my elbow (I was usually sitting on the floor with him). Or I would simply move away or up into a chair. He would usually shift back in order to lean on me again, and I would move away again as well. When he was relaxed and lying next to me without touching, I would pet him calmly.

Biliyorum biliyorum. some of you are thinking, “But affection does not reinforce a dog’s fears.” Bu doğru. and I’m not saying you should correct a fearful dog. just look for ways to block some habits in order to slowly help the dog move on and grow.

See my post: Does affection reward a fearful dog?

Treats and favorite toys can also be very useful to help distract an insecure dog from everything going on. You can use treats to get him to think about something else like sit or stay and build his confidence that way. sometimes I would make Cosmo lie down and stay a foot away. then he would get the treat as a reward for maintaining distance. “Wow, what a good boy! Çok cesur!”

2. Some dogs climb into their owners’ laps in order to feel more secure

Some little dogs will climb into their owners’ laps in order to feel more secure. big dogs try this as well, but it’s usually the smaller dogs that tremble in their owners’ arms because they fear something in the environment.Instead, the owner should place the dog on the ground and slowly help him understand that nothing bad happens in new situations. The owner should ignore the dog or move away when he frantically paws at her legs to get back up. She should give him a treat or pick him up only when he is calm or if the situation is truly risky for the little guy.

And of course, it’s important not to completely overwhelm the dog. If he’s fearful of new people and dogs it would be unfair to set him on the ground in the middle of a PetSmart or a street fair. but the owner should seek out less “scary” situations first and slowly challenge the dog more and more from there.

Some dogs will even become possessive of their owners, growling and biting from their owners’ arms if anyone gets too close. Of course they are going to be possessive. They don’t want to be removed from their “power source.”

But even these dogs are not barking out of dominance. They are barking up a storm because they are insecure. They are acting defensively.

So how can an owner fix this problem?

The same way as above. seek out situations that are not too overwhelming, and keep the dog on the ground. carrying him around will not help him build confidence.

Most little guys will right away try to jump back into their owners’ arms – their place of empowerment.

The owner should not allow this, not unless the dog is truly in danger.

If the dog tries to jump back into his owner’s lap, she should block him with her arm. If he makes it into her lap, she should stand and push him off or set him on the ground. If he starts growling and barking at people from her feet, she should put his leash on him and tether him away from her. She should reward him when he’s calm and not barking or crying.

The goal is to help the dog grow as an individual by weaning him away from his dependence on his owner.

See my post: how to stop my dog from guarding me.

3. Some dogs will hide between their owners’ legs at the dog park

When dogs hide between their owners’ legs at the dog park, many owners respond by petting the dog or talking to the dog.

Instead, it’s best to just step away. devam et. Don’t allow the dog to hide behind you or under you. help the dog build his confidence by decreasing his dependence on you.

If the dog seems overly shy or fearful, just walk away from the other dogs, re-group and return again after a few seconds. You don’t want to overwhelm your dog too much by forcing him to interact right off the bat. check out the dog park during quieter hours and don’t plan on staying for long. If he plays for a few seconds and then seems overwhelmed, just quit while you are ahead. At least he played for a few seconds. That is a success.

Some dogs appreciate socializing in smaller groups just like some people like to socialize in smaller groups. Some dogs and some people get tired of socializing sooner than others. Heck, I’m one of the most introverted people I know! I can certainly relate to all those introverted dogs out there.

What have you noticed about your dog when he leans on you?

Is he usually seeking attention? Güç? Güvenlik? probably all of the above, depending on the situation. let us know in the comments!
